It might even block some symptoms and shorten the length of an infection, even in people who aren’t deficient in the vitamin.

Researchers from Western Sydney University estimate that zinc—either put under the tongue or a nasal spray—can cut infection time by as much as two days.  People who supplemented also saw “significant reductions” in the severity of symptoms three days into the infection.

The only downside was that people taking zinc were more likely to experience mild reactions, such as slight nausea or mouth or nasal infection.

Although none of the 28 studies reviewed included Covid-19 patients, the reviewers believe zinc could be just as effective against the virus.

Zinc should be added to the public advisory response to Covid, the researchers say, even for people who are not deficient in the nutrient.
