Exercise seems to be one of the best ways to keep our brain sharp, say researchers from the University of California at San Francisco.

And there’s a bio-chemical reason why staying active is so important.  Exercise releases proteins that neurons in the brain need in order to handle information.  The researchers were surprised to find the benefits went way beyond the hippocampus region, which handles memories, and affected every area of the brain.

Exercise could also be countering the build up of amyloids and tau, toxic proteins that are the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease and which attack the brain’s synapses and neurons.

Simple and gentle activities—such as walking, gardening or cycling—can all help protect the brain.
