Stress, anxiety and depression dampen the immune system, and make us more susceptible to viruses, including Covid-19.

People who suffered the most from isolation and lockdown were also the ones most likely to get Covid during the first phase of the pandemic, researchers from the University of Nottingham have found.

They were also more likely to suffer more severe symptoms, say the researchers, who tracked around 1,100 volunteers from April to December 2020.

It’s a vicious circle.  Living with the pandemic and isolation can raise levels of stress, anxiety and depression and these, in turn, increase the risk of infection.
