    Full Citation: "There have been many treatments suggested for the management of mastalgia; one of these is the fruit extract of Vitex Agnus castus L. commonly known as Agnus castus, an extract of a deciduous shrub native to Mediterranean Europe and Central Asia. It is postulated that A. castus suppresses the stress-induced latent hyperprolactinemia which is a release of supra-physiological levels of prolactin in some patients in response to stressful stimuli. It is postulated that A. castus could be effective in the treatment of cyclical mastalgia by inhibiting the release of excess prolactin by blocking Dopamine-2 receptor type on pituitary. The adverse events following A. castus treatment are mild and reversible. The aim of this review is assess the efficacy of A. castus in the treatment of mastalgia. Data from randomized and non-randomized studies regarding the efficacy and safety of A. castus is reviewed in a systematic fashion. It is concluded that A. castus can be considered as an efficient alternative phytotherapeutic agent in the treatment of mastalgia."

    BACKGROUND: Phytoestrogens are plant-derived natural molecules having some bone forming and bone substituting effects. In the present study, the role of phytoestrogens on bone healing was investigated in a rabbit fracture model. METHODS: Twenty-two New Zealand white rabbits with right tibia fracture were divided into two groups randomly. The plant derived extract of Vitex agnus-castus L. (Verbenaceae) prepared before the study was administered intramuscularly in group 1 and group 2 was chosen as control. Fracture healing was monitored in weekly basis with blood alkaline phosphatase level, radiographs of extremities and 99m-Tc MDP bone scintigraphy. The study was finished at the end of the 3rd week. The extremities including tibial fractures were collected for histological examination. RESULTS: Radiographic evidence of fracture healing obtained on postoperative day seven was superior in group 1 than control group (p<0.01). The 99m-Tc MDP bone scintigraphy uptake ratios on postoperative seventh day showed higher uptake in group 1 than in group 2 (p<0.05). The differences of scintigraphic uptakes in fractured tibias calculated on postoperative seventh day and postoperative 14th in group 1 were higher than group 2 (p=0.04). The histopathologic evaluation performed after sacrification of all rabbits on postoperative 25th day showed no significant difference between both groups. No statistical difference was determined related to the other variables. CONCLUSION: Flavonoids affected positively the early periods of fracture healing mechanism in New Zealand white rabbits. We suggest further studies with phytoestrogens to determine the effects of various dosages and administration ways.

    Abstract:

    The aim of study presented here was to gather the data about the tolerability and efficacy of Vitex agnus castus (VACS) extract. The study was designed as double-blind, placebo controlled in two parallel groups (each 50 patients). Treatment phase lasted 3 consequent menstrual cycles (2 x 30 drops/day = 1.8 ml of VASC) or placebo. Mastalgia during at least 5 days of the cycle before the treatment was the strict inclusion condition. For assessment of the efficacy visual analogue scale was used. Altogether 97 patients were included into the statistical analysis (VACS: n = 48, placebo: n = 49). Intensity of breast pain diminished quicker with VACS group. The tolerability was satisfactory. We found VACS to be useful in the treatment of cyclical breast pain in women.
