  • Real cause of ME discovered—and, no, it's not all in your mind

Some doctors still quietly believe that chronic fatigue syndrome, or ME, is more in the mind of the sufferer—but new research has finally put paid to the theory. Instead, it's triggered by an overactive immune system, a discovery that fits with the stories of ME patients who noticed their symptoms started after an infection.

Researchers from King's College London studied 55 patients with hepatitis C who had been given the drug interferon-alpha that causes a similar response to a virus; 18 went on to develop ME-like symptoms, and they were also the ones who had the strongest reaction to the drug. They also had an overactive immune system before treatment started.

  • The diet to boost brain power and reduce stress

If you're prone to feeling stressed out, this diet will produce all the natural brain chemicals that can calm you down and boost your brain power, says psychotherapist Dr Mike Dow

Using food as self-medication is the most socially acceptable way to drug yourself. We all know that pints of ice cream put Band-Aids on worries and broken hearts. But sugar can be a disaster for your brain. It's vital for all of us to reduce the blood-sugar spikes lurking in all the tempting food most Westerners are presented with 24/7.

As your waistline grows with blood sugar-spiking foods, your hippocampus shrinks. This is a part of the brain that helps you remain resilient in the face of stress and helps regulate mood by controlling your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. It's also the part of the brain where the most neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells, occurs.

We now know that sugar and other blood sugar-spiking foods can wreak the same havoc on the hippocampus as trauma or extreme stress. The result: high levels of brain drainers like cortisol, which, in turn, can also lower levels of feel-good hormones like serotonin.

In 2015, the first human study demonstrating an association between diet and hippocampus volume was published. This study looked at people who followed a "prudent" diet versus the blood sugar-spiking "Western" diet.

    Abstract:

AIM:To investigate the effect of acupressure on fatigue among female nurses with chronic back pain.

BACKGROUND:Chronic back pain is one of the most common problems among nurses and has numerous physical and psychological effects. One of these effects is fatigue that impairs an individual's life.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:This randomized single-blind clinical trial was conducted on 50 nurses with chronic back pain working at the selected hospitals in Isfahan, Iran. After convenient sampling, the subjects were randomly allocated, through lottery, to the two groups of experimental (n=25) and sham (n=25). In the experimental group, acupressure techniques were performed during 9 sessions, 3 times a week for 14min for each patient. In the sham group, points within 1cm of the main points were only touched. Data were collected using the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), before, and immediately, 2weeks, and 4weeks after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software.

RESULTS:The mean score of fatigue severity before the intervention was not significantly different between the two groups (P=0.990). However, it was significantly lower in the experimental group than the sham group immediately (P<0.001), 2weeks (P=0.005), and 1month after the intervention (P<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS:Acupressure on specific points of the foot and back improves back pain so, reduces fatigue. Therefore, acupressure can be used as a drug-free and low-cost approach without side effects to improve fatigue in nurses with chronic back pain.

    Abstract:

Fatigue and depressive mood are the most significant symptoms experienced by patients with end-stage renal disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of acupressure with massage in fatigue and depression in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving hemodialysis treatment. The study applied an experimental pretest and posttest design. Sixty-two hemodialysis patients participated in the study. Data were collected from two hemodialysis clinics in major hospitals in southern Taiwan. Following consent to the study, subjects were randomly assigned to an acupressure group or a control group. Patients in the acupressure group received acupoint massage for 12 minutes per day, three days per week, for four weeks. Subjects in the control group only received routine unit care. The measures included the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale, and Beck ' s Depression Inventory. Descriptive statistics, chi 2 tests, t-test and analyses of covariance were used for data analysis. The results indicate that subjects experienced a moderate level of fatigue. Nearly 65 % of hemodialysis patients had a depressed mood. ANCOVA results indicated that fatigue (F((1.54)) = 9.05, p =.004) and depression (F((1.54)) = 4.20, p =.045) among patients in the acupressure group showed significantly greater improvement than patients in the control group. The findings of this study provide an interventional model for nurses taking care of ESRD patients.

    Abstract:

Nonpharmacologic interventions for symptom management in patients with rheumatoid arthritis are underinvestigated. Limited data suggest that aromatherapy massage and reflexology may help to reduce pain and fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study was to examine and compare the effects of aromatherapy massage and reflexology on pain and fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The study sample was randomly assigned to either an aromatherapy massage (n = 17), reflexology (n = 17) or the control group (n = 17). Aromatherapy massage was applied to both knees of subjects in the first intervention group for 30 minutes. Reflexology was administered to both feet of subjects in the second intervention group for 40 minutes during weekly home visits. Control group subjects received no intervention. Fifty-one subjects with rheumatoid arthritis were recruited from a university hospital rheumatology clinic in Turkey between July 2014 and January 2015 for this randomized controlled trial. Data were collected by personal information form, DAS28 index, Visual Analog Scale and Fatigue Severity Scale. Pain and fatigue scores were measured at baseline and within an hour after each intervention for 6 weeks. Pain and fatigue scores significantly decreased in the aromatherapy massage and reflexology groups compared with the control group (p < .05). The reflexology intervention started to decrease mean pain and fatigue scores earlier than aromatherapy massage (week 1 vs week 2 for pain, week 1 vs week 4 for fatigue) (p < .05). Aromatherapy massage and reflexology are simple and effective nonpharmacologic nursing interventions that can be used to help manage pain and fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Why you could be suffering from Lyme disease fatigue after 'successful' treatment

Antibiotics aren't always the complete cure-all for Lyme disease. Around 10 per cent of people who are supposedly cured go on to suffer chronic and life-destroying fatigue and 'brain fog', researchers have discovered.

These symptoms can last for years after the patient has been given the all-clear after successful high-dose antibiotic therapy.
